Articles on Biblical Giving

Generous, cheerful giving is commanded by God and required for the support of God's ministry on the Earth.  A person's willingness to give without being asked is evidence of that individual's loyalty to the will of God.

The Offering of Obedience

by Trial Associate Pastor Diana Davis

I John 2:3-17 reveals that a life of obedience is one of love, truth, light, overcoming and separation from the things of the world.  As we embrace the offering of obedience, we will experience the joy that Jesus intended us to have in our lives. “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments,” I John 2:3.  Looking at the definitions below will allow us to have knowledge accompanied by revelation.

Offering - to present for acceptance or rejection; something offered in worship/devotion; to give as a gift.

Obedience - compliance to authority; yielding; submission to authority; to hear; listen.

To summarize the above definitions, we could say an offering of obedience is our gift of worship to God and yielding to his authority.  His sovereignty allows him to accept or reject our offerings; and it's dependent on our motives.  Throughout the Bible, we are given examples of offerings prompted by obedience.  For instance, Abraham, when offering his only son Isaac, made a statement that proved his love, obedience and worship of God. “And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you,” Genesis 22:5.

The account of the Apostles, found in Acts 5:29, states that even when faced with trouble from the Sanhedrin, "We ought to obey God rather than men."  As we can see, there is an empowerment that comes with obedience.  Our greatest example is that of Jesus in the finished work of the cross.  He suffered great afflictions by the hands of men who rejected Him.  He endured, however, so the will of His Father would be manifested on Earth, along with the completion of our adoption into the family of God.  Romans

When obedience is activated by faith, done in love with a sincere heart, the oneness that Jesus speaks of in John

Tithing

by Trial Associate Pastor Diana Davis

Luke 16:10, "He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in the much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much."  What a powerful and true statement made in this passage, the specific topic that we will be discussing will require us to self-examine and make sure our hearts are open to the truth given us by God in His word.

Unfortunately, because of abusive behaviors and false teachings, the beauty and understanding of tithing has been lost, but Jesus is raising a people whose desire is that the people of God know the truth and that this part of worship to God is restored.  Tithe simply means tenth.  It's a teacher of giving and a reminder to us that nothing we have is our own.  One hundred percent (100%) of our earnings belong to God; but He only requires 10% of our gross income to be given in the offering of tithe.  The balance of 90% is ours; and because He's a God who loves our obedience and worship, He turns around and blesses the remaining income. Yes, there are other ways to tithe like time, labor, etc.; but monetary tithing is needed for the house of God, just like our personal lives.  I'm reminded of the passage found in Nehemiah 13:11, “Then contended I with the rulers and said, Why is the house of God forsaken?

When we accept Jesus in our lives, we also receive the awesome responsibility of becoming stewards in the kingdom of God.  The word steward comes from the Greek word oikonomon’ (oikos means: house & nomon means: to distribute), meaning one in charge of the administrations and affairs of the true owner.  We are God's managers.

The first mention of tithe is found in Genesis 14:20, the account of Abraham and Melchizedek, King of Salem: “And blessed be the most high God, which has delivered thine enemies into thy hand.  And he [Abraham] gave him [Melchizedek] tithes of all.”  Some other familiar passages of scriptures for references and to assist in personal studies can be found in Malachi 3:10, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me.”  Hebrews 7:9-10, “And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham (10) For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchizedek met him.” Through the loins of Abraham, being descendants of him, our tithe was established in the giving unto the priesthood of Melchizedek.

Never be a giver with impure motives or compulsions, nor with feelings of obligations hoping to gain something, but with a love for God and His kingdom.  Tithing was before the law, not of law, so we see this is a covenantal relationship in honoring God's kingdom.  You could find yourself searching for reasons not to tithe, but think on how good the Lord is to us daily.  Don't worry about what others say, nor pay attention to rumors or terrible incidents that have happened regarding this matter.  When we are taught the truth we are to do what's right in the sight of Jesus.  Meditate upon Colossian
